The road out

M20 and the Folkestone shuttle, then a long continental drive. A van crosses easily; the question on this route is whether it should be making the journey at all.

From Calais the A16 and E40 run into Belgium, then the E40 and E314 for Aachen. Germany is crossed on the A4 and A44 onto the A2, which carries east past Hanover and Berlin and reaches the Polish frontier at Świecko. The A2 continues to Poznań and Warsaw; Wrocław sits south on the A4, Kraków beyond it, and the Tri-City north on the S3 and S6.

Poland applies the standard transfer-of-residence relief on used household effects, and the file is proportionate. The route is well trodden and the paperwork is the least of the difficulties on it.

This route is the clearest example of something this whole site argues. Traffic on the Britain–Poland corridor is heavy in both directions, vehicles run it constantly, and a shared lorry consignment therefore fills and departs frequently.

That gives a shared load a structural cost advantage on this route that it does not have to, say, Belgium. For anything more than a few items, sending it on a lorry alongside other consignments is very often cheaper than sending a van the whole way for you alone.
